How Much Do You Serve On Thanksgiving?
Personally, I’m a huge fan of Thanksgiving leftovers so I generally make more food than I think we’ll need. For my family of 6, plus a few friends, I prepare 2 appetizers, 4 side dishes, 1 main dish and a couple desserts. That being said, there’s no perfect answer for how much food to make on holidays.
The amount of side dishes that you prepare depends entirely on the preferences of your guests and the number on people you’re hosting. Here are the general portion sizes I use…
- Dips: 3 ounces of dip per person
- Small Bites: 3-5 bite sized portions per person
- Stuffing or Dressing: ½ – ¾ cup per person
- Turkey: 5 – 7 ounces per person, about half a pound
- Dessert: 1 slice of pie per person, a nine inch pie will serve about 8 people
- Salads: 1-2 cups of salad per person
- Mashed Potatoes or Yams: ¾ – 1 cup of potatoes per person
- Cranberry Sauce: ¼ – ⅓ cup per person
- Ham: 4 – 6 ounces per person, about 1.5 pounds per person of bone-in ham
- Drinks: 2 servings per person, about 10-12 ounces per person
