Opa! 63rd annual Memphis Greek Festival offers a taste of Greek food, culture

Opa! If you love Greek food, you need to put the Memphis Greek Festival on your to-do list this weekend.

The festival is May 20-21 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 573 N. Highland St.

The festival features a variety of Greek food options, including spanakopita (spinach pie), gyros, souvlakia (pork tenderloin), moussaka (eggplant casserole), pastitsio (Greek lasagna), marinated lamb chops, baklava and more than a dozen Greek pastries. Each dish is handmade with love by a small army of volunteers.

For 63 years, the congregation of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church has shared its love for the Greek Orthodox faith, heritage, food, music and culture with the people of the Mid-South through this annual two-day event.

Stanley Tucci says food played an important part in helping to ‘test’ how unwell his terminally ill wife felt

Stanley Tucci says food had an important role in gauging how sick his late wife became with cancer.
Speaking on the “River Cafe Table 4” podcast, Tucci recalled his then-wife often lost her appetite.
He said when someone is sick and they turn down food it’s a good way to “test” how unwell they are.

The 61-year-old actor and host of CNN’s travel and food show, “Searching for Italy,” spoke about his first wife Kate Spath-Tucci with Ruthie Rogers, the host of the “River Cafe Table 4” podcast, on Tuesday’s episode.

Tucci was married to Spath-Tucci for 14 years and the couple had three children before she died in April 2009, The Independent reports. He

Ride On could cost $1 per ride beginning in July

The County Council switched Thursday from its preliminary position that Ride On bus rides would be free for a year — agreed that fares should be $1 per ride beginning in July.

Last week, council members voted 7-1 to make Ride On free through June 2023, while leaving Metrobus routes at $2 per fare, as part of their deliberations on the proposed fiscal 2023 operating budget. County Executive Marc Elrich had proposed $1 Ride On fares and $2 Metrobus fares in his $6.3 billion operating budget.

Elrich had previously told Bethesda Beat he wasn’t comfortable making Ride On free because he wasn’t sure if federal money — which had been subsidizing the county to allow for free fares — would continue. Before the coronavirus pandemic, Ride On fare cost $2 per ride.
